Why Do Dash Cams Still Use the Cigarette Lighter Port?

Although the cigarette lighter was originally designed for lighting cigarettes, its role in modern vehicles has changed completely. Today, the socket is mainly used as a convenient power source for a wide range of accessories, including power inverters, air compressors, mobile chargers, and dash cams.
For dash cam users, there are two common ways to power the device:
1. Cigarette Lighter Socket
This is the easiest installation method. Simply plug the charger into the vehicle's power socket and the dash cam will turn on and off automatically with the vehicle in most cases.
2. Hardwire Kit (Fuse Box Connection)
A hardwire kit connects the dash cam directly to the vehicle's fuse box. This option provides a cleaner installation and is commonly used when parking surveillance is required.
If you only use the dash cam while driving and do not need 24-hour parking monitoring, the camera will stop drawing power once the vehicle is turned off, so there is no concern about battery drain.
Both installation methods are widely used, and the best choice depends on your vehicle and how you plan to use the dash cam.
